    Holy Cow, Miami cleaned house

UM fires at least four football coaches
    By SUSAN MILLER DEGNAN
    [email protected]

The University of Miami fired at least four of its assistant football coaches Monday morning, three days after Louisiana State embarrassed the Hurricanes 40-3 in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

Gone are two of its most entrenched leaders: Assistant head coach Art Kehoe, who also served as offensive line coach and played at Miami; and running backs coach Don Soldinger.

Also gone: offensive coordinator Dan Werner and linebackers coach Vernon Hargreaves.

Head coach Larry Coker and senior associate athletic director Pete Garcia delivered the news to the coaches. It was unknown as of 9:30 a.m. if anyone else was fired.

''I got fired. I wish I didn't, but I did,'' Kehoe said. ``I have to move on with my life and take care of my family now.

``I am eternally grateful to the University of Miami for giving me one of the greatest lives you could ever have in college football. We won more games, more national titles, more bowl games, more big games.. When you think about it, I owe everything to this school.

any chance this backfires in recruiting

Miami isnt recruiting Ball, he doesnt have the grades to get in so its a mute issue. Recruting is very overrated for them, good coaches who develop players is the biggest issue with the program. Look at what Weiss did in ND, what Galen Hall has done at Penn State, and what the new OC has done at Texas. Miami will get good recruits no matter what, Marcus Ball wouldnt develop at Miami with Vernon Hargreaves coaching him.

Miami's standards are similar to notre dame's these days for athletes. When Shalala came in, she up'd the minimum SAT/GPA scores and changed the requirements for high school classes to be taken to get into Miami. Miami is one of the better schools in the ACC. Obviously Duke, UVA, Wake, and UNC are better but they are def. closer to the top than they are the bottom.

have at it. He would have sat on the bench for 2 years as a safety at miami regardless. Hes a good player but 1 player is not a team make.

This is a start. Good to see that the folks from The U are committed to cleaning this mess up. Too bad the axe hasn't fell on Joker yet.

I think he can become a figure head like Bowden, but he definietly needs to get the best assistants.

I cant post the article because its a pay article but he fired soldiger and hargreaves and didnt even give them a reason why he fired them. They asked why they were being fired and he said he would rather not get into it. Thats some fat Phil crap right there, I dont have nearly as much respect for Coker anymore.

Re: Holy Cow, Miami cleaned house

I agree. If I were an assistant coach who's boss fired me, I'd hope that he'd at least have the testicular fortitude to tell me why. Heck the RB coach? That's iffy anyway. Yeah, fire the OC obviously.
So the question for us is who's out there that we'd want at OC to start with? Miami is an attractive lure, so we should have a broad list, but with the turmoil at this time, we would have to have a tough as nails thick-skin no doubt.
